What is Body Fat Percentage?
Body fat percentage is the total mass of fat divided by total body mass, expressed as a percentage. It includes essential body fat (necessary for life and reproductive functions) and storage body fat (accumulated in adipose tissue). Knowing your body fat percentage gives a more accurate picture of your fitness than weight alone.
U.S. Navy Method
This calculator uses the U.S. Navy circumference method, which estimates body fat percentage using measurements of the neck, waist, and (for women) hip circumference along with height. While not as precise as methods like DEXA scanning, it provides a reasonable estimate that you can track over time.
How to Measure
For the most accurate results, measure your waist at the navel level (not at the narrowest point), your neck just below the larynx (Adam's apple), and for women, your hips at the widest point. Use a flexible tape measure and take measurements in the morning before eating.
